Amsterdam (pronounced /ˈæmstərdæm/; Dutch [ɑmstərˈdɑm] (help·info)) is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. The city, which had a population (including suburbs) of 1.36 million on 1 January 2008, comprises the northern part of the Randstad, the sixth-largest metropolitan area in Europe, with a population of around 6.7 million.
Its name is derived from Amstellerdam,[7] indicative of the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. Settled as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age, a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading center for finance and diamonds.[8] In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were formed.
The city is the financial and cultural[9] capital of the Netherlands. Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and 7 of the world's top 500 companies, including Philips and ING, are based in the city.[10] The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world is located in the city centre. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, Anne Frank House, its red-light district, and its many cannabis coffee shops draw more than 3.66 million international visitors annually, as of 2009

IES Ferrer i Guardia: MY SCHOOL
L'IThe High School|Institute Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia is placed
on the Avenue of the Genelatitat, 30 of Sant Joan Despí,
region of the Baix Llobregat. It|He|She has a
history|story of more than 30 years, since it works since the
course 1977/78.
During all these years we have occupied three buildings: * until the
course 1979/80 we were in "La Masia" of Can Oliver; * the
summer of year 1980 we move ourselves to the street J.F. Kennedy; *
at present we are|find on the Avenue of the Generalitat, 30
very near the municipal swimming pool.
We impart ESO, High School|School Leaving Certificate and
Formative Cycles, of medium degree as well as of superior|upper
degree.
We understand the education like an integral and interactive process
destined to developing all aptitudes and the capacities of the students,
the cognitive and motores ones as well as the emotional and
relational ones and those that have relation|relationship with the
decision making and with the implication in the company|society.
We promote the participation|shareholding of all the collectives of
the educational community with an attitude of dialog, respect, critical
capacity and corresponsibility. We always have present that the center is
a place of learning for the life.

WHO WAS FRANCESC FERRER I GUÀRDIA??
Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia (January 10, 1859 – October 13, 1909) was a Catalan free-thinker and anarchist.
He was born in Alella (a small town near Barcelona) to Roman Catholic parents. A follower of Spanish republican leader Ruiz Zorilla, Ferrer was exiled to Paris with his wife and children in 1885. Divorced in 1899, he remarried a wealthy Parisian teacher shortly thereafter.
In 1901 he returned to Spain and opened The Modern School to teach middle-class children radical social values. In 1906 he was arrested on suspicion of involvement with Mateu Morral's attack on King Alphonso XIII and released uncharged over a year later. His school failed and closed while he was incarcerated.
Early in the summer of 1908, after his release from jail, he wrote the story of the Modern School. The work was entitled The Origins and Ideals of the Modern School and was translated into English by Joseph McCabe and published by the Knickerbocker Press in 1913.
Following the declaration of martial law in 1909 during the Tragic Week, he was arrested and executed without any proof by firing squad at Montjuich Fortress in Barcelona on October 13.
